Planting Seeds of Change

On November 16, 2024, Alpha Alpha Iota Omega Chapter, Maricopa County joined forces with Diana Gregory Outreach Services for a transformative day of environmental stewardship. In its second year, the initiative brought together organization members, Youth Leadership Institute (YLI) participants, and community volunteers to plant three fruit trees—lemon, peach, and plum—and 200 seedlings. As part of Alpha Kappa Alpha’s Enhance Our Environment initiative, these efforts are paving the way for a future harvest of fresh produce to benefit low-income seniors and veterans in the community.

Diana Gregory Outreach Services, which donated over 20,000 pounds of food in 2023, aims to surpass 30,000 pounds of food this year. Through programs like "Nourishing Seniors: Produce Delivery" and "Veggies for Veterans," the harvested fruits and vegetables will provide essential nourishment to those in need.

Twenty-five (25) Alpha Alpha Iota Omega members offered their time, energy, and resources, demonstrating a shared commitment to enhancing the environment and supporting vulnerable populations. Ms. Gregory and her staff offered expert planting guidance, reinforcing the connection between environmental health and community well-being.

This collaboration underscores the vital role of environmental initiatives in addressing food insecurity and fostering sustainability. By planting trees and seedlings, participants not only enriched the environment but also invested in a healthier, greener future for the community.
